This Wednesday, August 26, I was invited to join Simon & Schuster Canada at the Spoke Club for their fall preview party. Upon receiving the invite, I was very excited. I’d never attended an event with S&S before, and I was anxious to get the chance to widen my network and meet a bunch of new bloggers, booksellers, publishers and authors.
The event itself was absolutely amazing. Seeing as how the night was to celebrate the new childrens’ and YA releases coming up, Simon & Schuster used the beautiful space to invite attendees to embrace their inner child, and also their adultier side. On one side of the room, there were snow cones and a book-themed candy bar (which you are sorely mistaken if you think I didn’t take full advantage of that!), and on the other side, there was an open bar and some seating areas to relax and enjoy your wine (likewise).
A Simon & Schuster photo booth was also set up, where everyone was encouraged to pick up a prop and take a selfie with their fellow book-lovers. Some of the props were more general, but a lot of them were based off of the books of the evening. I tended to lean towards anything from The Blackthorn Key by Kevin Sands, because it was the only one I’d actually read, but also because I am a huge fan of that book (review to come). But it was super fun being able to be silly with my fellow blogger friends and take some great photos!
Upon arrival, we were also told that there was a table full of ARCs of the books that would be celebrated that evening, and we could take any of them that we wanted. So I picked up three middlegrade/YA novels and held them closely the rest of the night. New books are like my babies. Since most of the authors were at the event, wearing name tags to be easily spotted, we were able to get our new books signed as well!
I had the chance to meet Kevin Sands (author of The Blackthorn Key), at the Ontario Book Blogger Meet-Up last month, so he had already signed my book. But he ended up sitting nearby, so I had to let him know that I finally finished the book and absolutely loved it, and he said he was currently writing the sequel, so I fangirled a little bit there. But seriously, it comes out September 1, you need to read that book.

I spent the evening talking to some awesome bloggers and talented authors, and had a ton of fun! But the night wasn’t over – as we headed out the door, we were given a swag bag full of neat items such as S&S magnets, temp tattoos, bookmarks, handy to-do lists, and some sweets from the candy bar!

This was honestly one of the most fun events I’ve been to, and I can’t wait to see what kind of things Simon & Schuster does in the future!
